How is MRI Performed?

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a painless procedure that lasts 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being scanned and the number of images being taken. Your technologist will conduct a prescreening to insure there are no metal in or on you.

  • You will change your clothes into a gown or scrubs and positioned on the MRI table.
  • You will be given earplugs and possibly head phones to help protect your hearing. (Earplugs are great hearing protection) This is because the MRI produces very loud noises while scanning.
  • The technologist will slide you, either head or feet first, into the MRI unit with your body part of concern into the center.
  • You are required to remain completely still during the exam.
  • In case of emergency or if you have claustrophobia you can use a panic device to alert the technologist that you need to stop the exam.
  •  At the end of the exam the technologist will take you out the MRI scanner.
